Background of the Study
Public transportation is fundamental to economic integration, linking urban and rural regions and enhancing regional competitiveness. In Nigeria, investments in buses, railways, and other transit modes aim to reduce travel time, expand market access, and stimulate local economies (Olayinka, 2023). Improved public transit systems can foster job creation, reduce congestion, and enable smoother movement of goods and services (Fadare, 2024). However, many public transportation networks in Nigeria remain underdeveloped due to funding constraints, outdated infrastructure, and management inefficiencies (Ike, 2023). Recent research highlights that modernizing public transit systems is essential for mitigating regional disparities and boosting economic performance (Obi, 2024). This study critically assesses the role of public transportation in strengthening regional economies by examining how transit efficiency correlates with economic output, investment attraction, and overall regional development. It also explores policy and infrastructural reforms needed to optimize the benefits of public transportation (Adebisi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of public transportation, many Nigerian regions suffer from poor transit connectivity and operational inefficiencies. Inadequate public transportation restricts access to employment opportunities, markets, and essential services, thereby hindering economic growth (Uche, 2023). The failure to maintain and modernize transit systems has led to persistent challenges, including increased travel times, elevated costs, and reduced competitiveness of regional economies. These issues underscore the need for a critical evaluation of current public transportation systems and their impact on regional economic performance. This study aims to identify the main factors that limit the efficiency of public transit and to propose strategies to enhance its role in regional development (Chinwe, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of public transportation on regional economic development.
  • To identify challenges affecting the efficiency of transit systems.
  • To recommend strategies for improving public transportation and boosting regional economies.

Research Questions:

  • How do public transportation systems influence regional economic performance?
  • What are the major challenges facing public transit in Nigeria?
  • What policy measures can enhance the role of public transportation in regional development?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Effective public transportation systems significantly enhance regional economic development.
  • H2: Infrastructure and management challenges impede transit efficiency.
  • H3: Strategic improvements in public transportation can boost regional economic performance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses on regions with established public transportation networks. Limitations include variability in data quality and regional differences in service provision.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Public Transportation: Shared transit services provided for the general public.
  • Regional Economies: Economic systems within defined geographical areas.
  • Transit Efficiency: The ability of transportation systems to meet user needs effectively.
